"ASHA" is a rural based
registered voluntary organisation founded on 21st June 1988 having
non-profit making, apolitical, Secular and non-sectarian
characteristics with autonomous and interdisciplinary nature.
After one and half decade of grass
root level praxis with other Indian vulnerable massess, ASHA means "
the hope " has emerged for the restoration of new hopes in the hearts
of the deprived and marginalised millions who have been victims of the
existing socio-ecconomic, cultural, environmental and political
condtions of the contemporary society. It strives for the creation of
a more equitable, peaceful, sustainable and harmonious living
environment for all
In Order to achieve this goal, a
group of young people spearheaded by Mr. Raghunath deliberately
initiated a series of participatory community action programmes in
proximity with the under privileged sections in various remote regions
of India and more intensively in different parts of Orissa since 1975.
While promoting action programmes, they internalised the matrix of the
multidimensional facets of the problems of women, children, tribals,
rural poor and other backward communities that sensibly conceptualised
the perceptional clarity among them about the real causes of poverty,
polarisation and degraded living environment of the poor masses.
This kind of societal internalised understanding led them to be more
and more committed and critical which has inspired them for resuming
towards an unending endeavour. Finally visualising the present local
as well as global situation and legalisation, it was considered to
create "ASHA" on the 21st day of June 1988 in order to set in motion
the process of sustainable community development Programmes in an
organised way. ASHA is " the hope " both for the hopeless and
have-nots.
